Europe can reduce CO2

Padraic Larkin - Monday, March 01, 2010

Europe can reduce CO2 from Power Generation by 80%

Chatham House in London has been the home of the Royal Institute of International Affairs for ninety years. Their mission is to be a world-leading source of independent analysis, informed debate and influential ideas on how to build a prosperous and secure world for all

On 1 March a conference in Chatham House was told that

Europe's power generation could cut its carbon output dramatically while maintaining reliability of supply.

It is possible for Europe to cut its CO2 emissions by 80% against 1990 levels by 2050 and to reduce its energy imports to 7% compared to the 35% it imports at present.

Better transmission interconnections across Europe will reduce the need for back-up supply and balancing services.

Reliability and cost are no longer the main obstacles to achieving such a reduction and, while some practical challenges remain, the biggest stumbling block is the political will to make the transition.

The conference was told that the short-term investments required to achieve this transformation would reduce European GDP growth rate by 0.02% but, in the longer term, GDP would actually increase above business-as-usual.

A report on the conference will be published in April.
